“Increasing Marine Environmental Awareness Through the Creative Arts”: milestones achieved

We are excited to share significant milestones for the project “Increasing Marine Environmental Awareness Through the Creative Arts,” led by the passionate Rebecca Katsaris and a talented team of artists and educators— all external collaborators of Enalia Physis Environmental Research Center.

This inspiring initiative has received official recognition as part of ‘Blue Thread’: UNESCO-IOC Recognition for Initiatives Putting Ocean Literacy in Action, a prestigious acknowledgment that connects their work with a global network dedicated to advancing ocean literacy and promoting sustainable stewardship of marine environments.

Rebecca expressed her gratitude, stating, “This recognition places our initiative among impactful projects worldwide committed to fostering deeper connections with the Mediterranean and beyond. Becoming part of the Blue Thread network strengthens our alignment with the goals of the Venice Declaration, empowering us to expand our impact, reach new audiences, and share our creative approach to ocean education.”

In addition to this esteemed recognition, during the recent European Maritime Day 2025 event held in Cork, Ireland, the project was honoured with a Special Award at the #MakeEUBlue initiative.

From inspiring conversations at the #EU4Ocean booth to creative exchanges with initiatives like the Network of European Blue SchoolsProBleu ProjectEuropean Marine Science Educators Association (EMSEA) and EuroGOOSEuropean Marine Board IVZW – to mention a few – to engaging sessions on advancing #OceanLiteracy and sustainable ocean governance, this year’s gathering brought together passionate educators, artists, scientists, youth leaders, NGO representatives, policy makers, and ocean advocates from all across Europe.

Rebecca remarked on the significance of the award: “I couldn’t be more proud! This recognition honours our team’s ongoing dedication to working with children and educators in Cyprus, using creative arts to inspire empathy, awareness, and care for the Mediterranean Sea. Thank you to the Enalia Physis Environmental Research Center, the Cyprus Environment Foundation, and the wider Conservation Collective network for believing in the power of creative ocean education. As we celebrate these achievements, we look forward to continuing our journey and counting down to #EMD2026 in Cyprus. Stay tuned for more updates!”
